I hadn't seen my cousin Jeff in over a decade, and when my band LAKE was coming to Chicago I decided to look him up and see if he could come to our concert there. We made arrangements, and in one of those “Oh, yeah, by the way” moments at the end of our phone conversations I asked him if he knew any Carter songs. He said he'd see what he could come up with between getting off work and coming to the show. That night, I first approached somebody who looked to me like Jeff looked 10 or 15 years ago, then remembered that people age. He found me shortly after, and we borrowed Karl Blau's guitar and took to the basement where my cousin and I caught up and committed his version of Johnny Cash's version of the Carter family's version of this song. Afterward, he showed me pictures of his kids.
